Where to Ride on Hatteras Island

Once you've secured your bike rental, it's time to set out and explore the Hatteras Island trails. With so many paths to choose from, you can find one that fits your group's activity level perfectly.

A popular trail is the .8-mile Buxton Woods loop trail. Make your way through the maritime forest on this path that starts and ends at the Buxton Woods picnic area. You'll get an up-close look at the diverse ecosystem and the animals that call it home.

Explore the "Tri-Villages'' on the bike path that borders NC Highway 12. During your ride, take a detour on residential roads, including Colony Drive, which borders oceanfront homes with many community beach accesses to hop off and explore.

Make your way to Pea Island Wildlife Refuge for a truly stunning bike ride. Biking is allowed in the park but only on designated public access routes and the service road around North Pond.

Avon has a sidewalk stretching from end to end, creating endless avenues for a scenic pedal. If you wish to veer off the main road, the path can take you into Kinnakeet Shores, a community with ponds, trees, and bounds of nature.

For those staying at the end of the island, Hatteras provides brand new sidewalks as of 2022! Cruise through town and stop by your favorite shops or eateries.

You can find other trail options in the Salvo Day Use Area, the National Park Service area around Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Hatteras Village, and Kinnakeet in Avon.
